The symbol is a teardrop-shaped hoop with a cross connected directly below it, to represent the sun making its path upward and over the horizon.

It also represents the union of man and woman, symbolizing the creation of life. According to one of the theories about the origin of the ankh, the symbol could be the combination of the male and female icons representing Osiris and Isis, the cross and the oval, respectively.
